Big Idea

From the beginning of time, God has used spoken words as one means to achieve His will. Both Old and New Testaments contain examples of God’s word being delivered through men and women of faith. Prophetic words, sermons, teaching, and exhortation require a faith response for transforming minds, hearts, and actions.

Application / Reflection

  • Write: Reflect on the way the shared Word has one primary goal. How have your listening and application habits measured up to this goal? What maturing, equipping, edifying, or unifying (Eph 4:12-13) need do you have? What steps will you take to actively learn from the shared Word in the weeks to come?
  • Pray: Prayer invites disciples to join with God in His kingdom work. Pray that you and the church world hear the Word in more personal and sustaining ways. Pray for pastors, preachers, and teachers to share the Word in ways that mature the church for God’s purposes. Pray on behalf of yourself, your family, and your ministry team members to grow in the stature of Christ. Pray for greater awareness of spiritual and service growth in your own life and that you would remain open to hearing the Word in these areas.
  • Share: Discuss your key learning from this lesson or other lessons in this series. What are your key learning points? How do learning points differ from person to person in your discussion group? Share ways you plan to be a more active listener for preaching and teaching in the future. Discuss how the group can help each other grow in “the full stature of Christ.”
