Big Idea

Wisdom from above calls disciples to live in light of Christ’s return. Pastor James comforted his scattered congregation with the assurance that God heard their cries against injustice, and that He will judge those who oppress the poor and hoard wealth for themselves. Believers must use their wealth righteously, blessing and caring for others.

Application / Reflection

  • Write: Reflect on James’ prophetic warning against misplaced treasure. What do you count as your treasure? How do you calculate your worth and wealth? What treasures are you storing up? What is their purpose? How should you use your resources as you live in light of eternity?
  • Pray: Pray for wisdom from above so that you may live with a right heart, properly placed treasure, and a clear vision of eternity. Pray for courage to trust the Lord’s deliverance, timing, and provision. Pray for grace to value people more than things, and the Kingdom more than comfort and consumption.
  • Share: Discuss ways that disciples can use their resources to care for others. How might we create financial margins by reducing our consumption and debt? What steps can we take together to care for the needy both locally and globally?
