Creating a Life Anthem: More than a Song and Dance

Timeless Principles for Life’s Journey

In Exodus 15 we find the first song in the Bible. This “Song of Moses” was composed just after the Children of Israel left their slavery in Egypt. They had crossed the Red Sea and escaped their enemies through the miraculous intervention of God, and this song celebrates their deliverance. It also reveals timeless principles for traveling life’s journey and arriving victoriously at the destination.

A Song of Declaration

The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him (Exo 15:2).

The first element of a life anthem is the declaration that the Lord is God. Placing the Lord on the throne will provide true direction of a life. When our relationship with God is central, we will discover that all the other relationships in life fall into rhythm and harmony.

A Song of Reflection

Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea (Exo 15:3)

Part of a victorious life anthem is remembering and testifying of God’s greatness. Reflecting on His goodness and His grace will keep you steady in difficult days. Never forget what God has done, and know that He will do it again.

A Song of Celebration

Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy (Exo 15:6).

In the Song of Moses, the Children of Israel celebrated their new-found freedom. In a similar way, our life anthem should include celebration of God’s gifts and blessings. We are free in thought, spirit, and life. We are free from the world and its system. We are free from condemnation and the enemy’s power. We have a reason to celebrate!

A Song of Anticipation

Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. The LORD shall reign for ever and ever (Exo 15:17-18).

A life anthem also includes anticipation of the fulfillment of God’s promises. He has promised His presence and provision in this life, and He has given us a sure hope for the future. As we sing our life anthem here below, we anticipate the day when we will sing a new song there on high (Rev 5:6-14).
