The Journey of Knowing God—and Being Known by Him

The Word Who Made Himself Known

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

From the opening words of John’s Gospel, we’re invited into the breathtaking mystery of a God who has made Himself known. The One who spoke creation into being stepped into creation Himself. The eternal Word became flesh and walked among us—light in our darkness, life in our lifelessness, truth in our confusion.

John paints Jesus as the visible image of the invisible God—the Word who didn’t just speak life, but became life. Every verse of John 1 shouts a simple truth: God wants to be known.

Knowing Him Is a Journey, Not a Destination

On a trip through Acadia National Park, you could spend days driving winding roads, stopping at overlooks, and still never see it all. Each trail reveals a new view; each turn exposes a new wonder.

Knowing God is the same. He has revealed Himself, yet He cannot be fully explored—and that’s good news. Every prayer, every Scripture, every encounter adds another layer to our understanding of who He is.

We’re not meant to put God into a neat, predictable box. Instead, like explorers in awe, we stand at the edge of grace and marvel: The Creator of the universe has chosen to dwell with us.

Don’t lose the wonder of a God who reveals Himself because He wants to be known.

Jesus: Our Wonderful Savior

John’s Gospel begins where all stories should—with Jesus.
While other Gospels start at His birth or ministry, John takes us back to eternity past: “In the beginning.”

Jesus is:

  • The Word and wisdom of God made flesh.

  • The Light that destroys darkness.

  • The Life that renews creation.

  • The King at the helm of the universe.

  • The Door to salvation and freedom from sin.

Through Him, we have become children of God—born not of human will, but by divine grace.

And today, He’s still revealing Himself to those who seek Him.

Experiential Knowing: Meeting the “I AM”

John’s Gospel doesn’t stop at theology; it becomes deeply personal. Jesus introduces Himself again and again as the great “I AM.”

  • I AM the Bread of Life — He satisfies every hunger.

  • I AM the Light of the World — He pushes back the darkness.

  • I AM the Gate — He opens the way to abundant life.

  • I AM the Good Shepherd — He never abandons His flock.

  • I AM the Resurrection and the Life — He conquers sin and death.

  • I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life — He leads us to the Father.

  • I AM the True Vine — He empowers us to bear lasting fruit.

These are not mere titles; they’re experiences. Each name reveals a facet of His character, an invitation to know Him more intimately.

He Knows You

God’s desire to be known is matched only by His desire to know you.

He knows your weakness—He formed you from dust and remembers your frame. He knows your path, your pain, and even the quiet ways you’ve tried to escape what hurts.

You can stop striving to appear strong; your Creator already knows your limits and offers His strength instead.

Perhaps God is using your current season—whether joy or struggle—to reveal more of Himself to you. Not just through Scripture on a page, but through His presence in your life.

Real Christianity isn’t a checklist; it’s a relationship.

How Sweet It Is to Know Him

If you feel lost, keep drawing near until you know Him as the Way.
If you feel weary, rest in the truth that He knows who you need Him to be right now.

Knowing Him is not a someday promise—it’s eternal life now.

Relationships are rarely efficient; they take time and intentional space. God isn’t asking for your perfection—He’s asking for your presence. Create margin to meet Him, even in the mundane moments.

As you know Him more deeply, you’ll find yourself wanting to make Him known—to your family, your neighbors, and throughout the North Cities region of Dallas.

Because there is nothing sweeter than this:
To know Him, and to be known by Him.
