Boundaries often get a bad reputation.
Our culture tends to view them as restrictions that limit freedom or prevent us from enjoying life. But throughout history—and throughout Scripture—boundaries have served a very different purpose.
They protect.
They preserve.
They provide security.
In his message, “Security Inside the Boundaries,” Bishop D. G. Hargrove uses the invention of barbed wire as a powerful illustration of God’s design for our lives. Just as fences transformed the American frontier by protecting livestock, defining property, and bringing order to chaos, God’s boundaries are given not to imprison us but to protect us.
For families throughout Garland, Murphy, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett, Wylie, Dallas County, Collin County, and Rockwall County, this message is a timely reminder that God’s boundaries are expressions of His love.
Boundaries Changed the American Frontier
Before barbed wire was invented in 1874, life on the Great Plains was marked by uncertainty.
Farmers struggled to protect their crops.
Ranchers couldn’t keep cattle contained.
Property lines were unclear.
Conflict was common.
When Joseph Glidden patented his improved design for barbed wire, everything changed.
Boundaries created order.
Fields were protected.
Livestock remained secure.
Communities flourished.
What many initially viewed as a restriction actually became a blessing.
The same principle is true spiritually.
God establishes boundaries because He desires security, not limitation.
God’s Boundaries Are for Our Good
One of the greatest misconceptions about Christianity is that God wants to keep us from enjoying life.
The opposite is true.
God places boundaries around our lives because He knows what leads to life and what leads to destruction.
Just as loving parents establish healthy limits for their children, our heavenly Father provides boundaries that protect our hearts, relationships, and future.
Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 reminds us:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Everything flows from the condition of the heart.
Our thoughts.
Our attitudes.
Our decisions.
Our relationships.
God’s boundaries help us guard the most valuable part of who we are.
God’s Lines Fall in Pleasant Places
Psalm 16:6 declares:
“The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.”
David didn’t view God’s boundaries as burdens.
He saw them as blessings.
The safest place to live is always inside God’s will.
What Keeps Us Inside God’s Boundaries?
God never asks us to remain faithful through willpower alone.
He provides everything we need to remain close to Him.
1. The Love of Christ
Our greatest motivation isn’t fear.
It’s love.
Paul wrote:
“For the love of Christ constraineth us…”
God’s love doesn’t merely comfort us.
It compels us.
When we truly understand the depth of Christ’s sacrifice, obedience becomes a joyful response rather than a reluctant obligation.
Love keeps us near the One who first loved us.
2. God’s Word
Every journey needs direction.
God has provided His Word as the roadmap for life.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
The Bible doesn’t simply tell us where we’ve been.
It illuminates where we’re going.
God’s Word provides wisdom when decisions become difficult.
It brings clarity when life becomes confusing.
It anchors us when culture shifts around us.
3. The Hope of Heaven
The world constantly pulls our attention toward temporary things.
Scripture redirects our focus toward eternity.
When our hearts are fixed on Heaven, earthly distractions lose much of their power.
The promise of eternity gives believers strength to remain faithful even when life becomes difficult.
Hope keeps us moving forward.
4. The Spirit of God
Living for God has never been about human effort alone.
Zechariah reminds us:
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD.”
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome temptation, walk in obedience, and experience genuine transformation.
We don’t stay inside God’s boundaries because we’re strong.
We stay because His Spirit strengthens us daily.
5. Prayer
Healthy relationships require communication.
Our relationship with God is no different.
Prayer keeps our hearts aligned with His.
It renews our strength.
It brings peace during uncertainty.
It reminds us that we were never meant to carry life’s burdens alone.
Paul encourages believers to bring everything before God in prayer, trusting Him to provide peace that surpasses understanding.
Prayer keeps us dependent upon God instead of ourselves.
6. Remembering God’s Faithfulness
One of the enemy’s greatest strategies is convincing us that God has forgotten us.
Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to remember.
Remember His mercy.
Remember His provision.
Remember His promises.
Remember His faithfulness.
Looking back at God’s goodness gives us confidence for whatever lies ahead.
The God who has carried us before will carry us again.
7. The Promise of Eternal Reward
Faithfulness is never wasted.
Paul encouraged believers:
“Your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
There are moments when serving God requires perseverance.
Moments when obedience costs something.
Moments when remaining inside God’s boundaries feels difficult.
But Scripture reminds us that God rewards faithfulness.
Every act of obedience matters.
Every sacrifice is seen.
Every faithful step carries eternal significance.
Freedom Is Found Within God’s Boundaries
Our world often defines freedom as having no limits.
God defines freedom differently.
Real freedom is found inside His design.
Fish experience freedom in water.
Trains experience freedom on tracks.
Children experience security within loving families.
Likewise, believers experience peace, joy, and purpose inside God’s boundaries.
The farther we drift from God’s design, the more vulnerable we become.
The closer we remain to Him, the more secure we become.
Stay Inside the Fence
Barbed wire didn’t eliminate freedom.
It created safety.
God’s boundaries function the same way.
His Word.
His Spirit.
Prayer.
His love.
His faithfulness.
The hope of Heaven.
These aren’t barriers meant to hold us back.
They’re gifts designed to keep us close to Him.
When we remain within God’s boundaries, we discover what our hearts have been searching for all along:
Peace.
Purpose.
Protection.
Security.
Because the safest place any believer can live is inside the boundaries established by a loving Heavenly Father.
