What Is Holding You?

Both Philippians and Hebrews discuss laying aside things that beset us and looking or pressing forward to the prize, the mark, to Jesus.  All of us are susceptible to set backs so we must stay focused on Jesus.

Text: Philippians 3:11-14; Hebrews 12:1-2

The weight of the past, of past mistakes, may seem heavy to us yet it is nothing to God.  There is no power greater than the Power of God.

What can hold us back?

  • Lack of faith
  • Possessions
  • People
  • Places
  • Little Things

“If you want to change big things, you pay attention to small things.” – Rudy Giuliani

Primarily, our past can hold us back.  People who are held by their past are captive to it.  God can set the captive free (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18).  He who the Son sets free is free, indeed (John 8:36). God wants to set us free.

Those who are lost and know it should repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sin and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38).  Jesus will baptize with the Holy Ghost and with fire (Matt. 3:11; Acts 2:1-4).

There are 3 way to view our past:

  • Wanting to go back to the past (this is dangerous)
  • Seeing regret which can cause us not to move forward
  • Failing to forgive ourselves for past mistakes even though God has.

We must realize we are “travelers” in this world and not “dwellers.”  A dweller’s diet is the culture.  Too many people are eating the diet of the culture.  Dwellers start looking like the culture, eating like the culture, and acting like the culture. The travelers diet is manna. Our diet should be the Word and the Spirit.

We have access and opportunity to treasures.  Let God’s Spirit have its way in our lives so that God can call us for what He wants to do. Forget the past.  Forgive our mistakes.  Let go and let God have victory over our lives.
